Australia’s childhood immunisation rates have increased since the introduction of the Maternity Immunisation Allowance in 1997.  Figure 1, above, shows an increase in the rates of vaccination in Australia for Polio (Pol3), Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MCV) and Diphtheria (DTP3), amongst 1-year-olds between 1995 and 2007, to above the 90% considered necessary for ‘herd immunity’ (Economist, 2012).  It can be seen that, after a steady rise in rates from 1995 to 1999, the rates have been at the same levels since then till 2007. Figure 2, below, compares Australia’s recent vaccination rates of 2-year-olds with the United Kingdom, United States and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average.  Australia’s immunisation rates currently sit near or above the rates in the UK and US, nations with similar cultures but varying health systems, and are mostly close to the OECD averages for Pertussis, Measles and Hepatitis B.

Your writing style needs to be clear and efficient .  Some key advice would be:

  • remember structure in writing:  introduce, discuss and conclude
  • use short sentences – long sentences lose the reader
  • one argument/idea per paragraph
  • but be careful how you think about one argument/idea – a paragraph stretching over two pages is NOT acceptable so look for natural breaks, sub-arguments/ideas

nor will a paragraph with only one or two sentences look right, so think about how to combine some points….
